CROP – HUNGER WALK
Saturday September
27, 2008
10:00 a.m. ~ BG
2008 marks the 61st
anniversary of CROP – Hunger Walk (Community
Responding to Overcome Poverty), the
appeal of Church World Service in the United States in which tens of thousands
of people will sacrifice a few hours to raise money and show solidarity with
impoverished people such as supplying tools and seed for planting crops for
food, digging water wells, teaching and showing them conservation and other
practices for a better means of survival and becoming self-sufficient. Assistance is also given to feed the hungry
and starving, stocking food banks and food pantries, refugee housing, disaster
relief, and many other ways to give the needy (many in number) in the world a
helping hand to show them we care about their welfare.
Over the decades since the first
walk, more than 5 million walkers have raised millions of dollars to help the
CROP – Hunger cause. Last year the Wood
County CROP-Hunger Walk raised over $4,100 – one fourth of which was returned
to help our local soup kitchens and food pantries. This is an on-going practice.
Consider walking, sponsoring a
youth of St. Mark’s or someone else walking, or contribute your donation in an
envelope clearly marked CROP-Hunger Walk into the offering plate. The noisy offering for September is
designated for CROP-Hunger. To learn
more about walking or pledging, contact any youth group member, Rachel March,
Terry Nowicki or Wib Miller.
FREE PIZZA after the
Walk!

DAILY PRAYER FOCUS for the week. There is immense
power in prayer, especially when many voices are lifted to God with the same
message. During your prayer time this
week you are encouraged to join other members of St. Mark’s in adding the
common prayer focus listed for each day of the week. Please lift your prayer to God the Father,
Son, and Holy Spirit in your own unique and personal way.
Monday – Blessed is the Nation whose God
is the Lord Jesus.
Tuesday – Teach me O Lord to follow Your decrees and obey them with all my heart.
Wednesday – Turn my heart toward Your statutes and not toward selfish gain.
Thursday – Let us clothe ourselves with
the Lord Jesus Christ and love one another fulfilling God’s commands for our
lives.
Friday – The Lord is my refuge and
fortress my God in whom I trust!
Saturday – Dear Lord keep
each man and woman in the service of our country in the shelter of the Most
High and rest them in the shadow of the Almighty.
Sunday – Thanks be to God our Father, who
will be with two or three, who come together in His name and will give them
whatever they ask for. Amen!

I will be writing a series of
short articles for the next several weeks about The Organ Renovation. Each
week I’ll focus on different aspects of the project. This week’s article is about the need for
renovation. The main need is that our
current console (the big “box” where the organist sits and plays) is failing. The control system in the console is all
mechanical and electrical, and many of these parts are deteriorating. Yes, some of them could be patched or fixed,
but would most certainly fail again soon.
(Why fix an old, broken, black & white, console television when you
could buy a new color television that would outlast the repaired black &
white one, and would offer a whole new prospective of seeing your favorite
shows in color?) The design and
construction of new electric organs use computers to control the inner workings
of the console, which are more reliable and offer much more flexibility in the
controls. The renovated and enhanced
organ will also offer more variety in the accompanying of the choir and
congregational singing. More sounds at
many volume levels (many at a softer level than we currently have) will be
available. This variety of sound and
increased flexibility in the controls will enable me to play many pieces of
organ literature that could be very spiritually fulfilling for the
congregation, pieces that I’m currently unable to play due to the musical
limitations of the current organ.
Next week’s article will be about
the various proposals we received, and why we chose the Rodgers Organ
Company. Please stay tuned!
There is a display in the
gathering area where you can check out a picture of our proposed new organ
console and hear a CD of what is possible with Rodgers Organs. There will be copies of the resolution from
the organ committee that was received by council as well as a reprint of my
July newsletter article about the organ.
A member of the organ committee will be there to answer any questions
you might have. We’ll be adding to the
display so check back often. – Kevin

CALENDAR: Please remember when you are
planning your next committee meeting, Bible study, or event, to contact the

keep rooms open and available for everyone.
Thank you.
HOSPITAL STAYS:
If you, or someone you know, are hospitalized, please be sure to contact
